Eva Stæhr-Nielsen (1911–1976) enrolled at the newly opened Academy of Arts in Copenhagen instead, never graduated, and on 1 June 1932 took an unpaid-in-all-but-name position at a small ceramics workshop called Saxbo. The job was meant to last three months. She stayed until the company closed, thirty-six years later.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe early work was hauling coal to the kiln and sieving glazes. It did not take long before she was drawing the forms. Saxbo pieces were worked out on the drawing board but always in close collaboration with one of the workshop's lathe operators — the shape and the turning decided together. The company was tiny at first; it took off after an exhibition at the National Museum in Stockholm in 1933, where she showed two pieces that would come to define the house: the Spaltekanden and the round teapot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eShe became chief designer and worked alongside Saxbo's owner, the glaze chemist Nathalie Krebs, until 1968. Krebs made the glazes, Stæhr-Nielsen made the forms, and between them they wrote a chapter of Danish design history — a gold medal at the Paris World Fair in 1937, another at the Milan Triennale in 1957, prizes in Tokyo and the United States.
