The Pepper Bird
The Pepper Bird: a wooden pepper mill and Danish design icon
The Pepper Bird is a wooden pepper grinder shaped like a bird, designed by the self-taught Danish designer Sven-Erik Tonn-Petersen (Tonn-P). It was first produced in the late 1950s and quickly became a favourite in Danish homes. It's playful enough to delight kids and handsome enough to leave out on the dining table.
After some years of great popularity, the Pepper Bird gradually disappeared. By then it was already a design icon, and collectors went hunting for originals at flea markets and antique stores. When Spring Copenhagen relaunched it in 2015, it quickly became a neo-classic of Danish design.
A working pepper grinder, not just a decoration
The Pepper Bird is made in FSC®-certified dark mahogany, ash, maple and walnut, with a ceramic CrushGrind® grinding mechanism. Each one is handmade and hand-assembled, so no two are exactly alike.
The perfect pair: The Pepper Bird and The Salt Penguin
Pair it with The Salt Penguin, its classic companion salt mill, for a salt and pepper grinder set that makes a memorable wedding gift, housewarming present or birthday gift for anyone who loves Danish design.
